History of COLORBOND Steel
Corrugated steel roots its history way back in 1900 century, in England. Where for the first time it was discovered how the corrugation of iron could produce strong, light weight roofing sheets and building material. The next decade witnessed this technology reaching the main lands of Australia, brought by John Lysaght; where it was quickly adopted by the early habitants as shelter from harsh conditions while settling in their new environments. Lightweight and stackable, corrugated sheet was easily transported across great distances. In some cases, complete prefabricated buildings were assembled from numbered sheets of corrugated iron. Galvanised iron, protected by a zinc coating, was a strong and long lasting material that didn’t need painting for protection, but many people painted it to improve its appearance. In earlier days, almost for a century painting was the only way for making the iron shelters look aesthetically appealing. The Chicago based Lithostrip Corporation and Pre Finish Metals discovered a way to successfully bond paint to a galvanized base, and John Lysaght was instrumental in getting this technology to Australia. While there were a lot of efforts invested in getting the process and the end resulting product right; in 1966 the first coil of COLORBOND® steel was rolled out from Number 1 coil painting line in Port Kembla, Wollongong. This breakthrough technology and its manufacturing process created a lot of buzz amongst the construction fraternity in Australia and COLORBOND® steel soon became the number one choice as a building material. Truly COLORBOND® steel is a well-researched product, especially developed for the harsh climatic conditions and moisture variations. In the very beginning, colour coated steel was brought to India in the year 2005 by the Joint Venture between Tata Steel and BlueScope, Australia to transform the Indian Architecture landscape, COLORBOND® steel is one of world’s most advanced pre-painted steel products for the building and construction industry.
