A roof to a home is one of the most important aspects. Since the designing of a house has been ever evolving over the years, the roof has evolved as well. The roofing material that originally started by being made using clay later evolved to shingles, which has been a widely popular roofing material in India and over the world. Due to the limitations of roofing shingles, people started looking for an alternative roofing solution to add a protective covering with better aesthetics and durability to their homes which resulted in steel roofing sheets coming into the picture.
Steel roofing sheets are a strong solution to all the roofing problems you face when designing a home or commercial space for yourself. Steel roofs are liked due to the various advantages that are attached to them. Steel roofing sheets are favored for their fire and water-resistant qualities, luster, longevity and durability and they are quick to install when done by a professional. This roofing solution is lightweight and reflects the sun, which helps reduce the room temperature and helps the homeowner save on electricity bills too!
While deciding on steel roofing sheets for your home, you should be aware of the different types of steel roofing sheets available in the market. The properties attached to these different sheets and what is best for you as per your requirements. Below is a list of different types of roofing sheets available, their basic characteristics, materials used and their making process for you to understand and choose the most ideal roofing solution for your home.
Types of steel Roofing roofing sheets:
Galvanized corrugated sheets (GC sheets) : The most basic of the steel roofing sheets is the galvanized corrugated sheets. These sheets are created using steel as the base and a layer of Zinc is created above the inner steel layer which gives an added protection to the steel. Zinc helps slow down the corrosion process of the sheet and helps extend the life of sheets. One of the most common forms of steel roofing solutions, Galvanized corrugated sheets or GC sheets are a quick and economical roofing solution for any establishment. The corrugated pattern on the sheets helps in quick and easy installation of the sheets and also helps avoid leakage. When on a budget, GC sheets are the most ideal steel roofing solution for you.
Galvalume or Zinc-aluminum coated steel sheets: The Galvalume steel sheets or Zinc-aluminum coated steel sheets are an advanced steel roofing solution to the GC sheets. Unlike the GC sheets, the GL sheets have a layer of Aluminium and Zinc on top of the base steel roof. It has an alloy coating of 43.5 % Zinc (Zn), 55% Aluminium (Al) and 1.5 % Silicon.
Zinc coating protects steel by way of sacrificial protection. Aluminium protects steel by way of barrier protection and since Zn-Al coating contains both Zinc and Aluminium, it provide both sacrificial & barrier protection to steel. Zn-Al coating contains also provides improved performance against chipping and other external damages
Aluminium as a metal has properties that provide better corrosion resistance as compared to other metals. Its also helps give the steel roofing sheet a cleaner and more uniformed appearance.
For same thickness of coating, Zinc-Aluminium alloy coating imparts corrosion resistance of up to four times the life of Galvanized steel.Pre-painted galvanized iron (PPGI) sheets: Pre-painted steel sheets have a metallic coating and a paint coating over the base metal. The PPGI sheets have a Zinc coated or galvanized substrate, conversion coating, and suitable combinations of primer & paint coats on both the surfaces. PPGI refers to factory pre-painted steel roofing sheets, where the steel is painted before forming, as opposed to post painting which occurs after forming. Pre-painted steel sheets are generally referred to as colour coated steel sheets.
Pre-painted galvalume or Zinc Aluminum Sheets (PPGL) : Pre-painted galvalume sheets or Zinc Aluminum coated Sheets, is the painted version of Galvalume steel sheets.
The PPGL sheets have a Zinc- aluminum alloy substrate, conversion coating, and suitable combinations of primer & paint coats on both the surfaces.
The paint layer over the metallic coating provides an additional layer of protection and adds to the aesthetics of the steel roofing sheets. The paint coating also improves the thermal efficiency of these steel sheets
These steel sheets exhibit better solar reflectivity and hence helps to maintain the internal temperature of the buildings in which it is used.
When deciding on steel roofs for you home, you can choose from a variety of patterns such as steel sheets, steel liners, steel tiles or even wall cladding solution which can be installed in various sized establishments. A steel roof has various advantages attached to it can be a very long-lasting and beautiful solution for your home.
